The First Net-Zero Energy Preschool

In 2018, New Day School embarked on a renovation project of two of its three buildings.

The renovation included a seismic retrofit of the Mahávidyá building (1847 SE Clinton) and also included energy upgrades, lighting upgrades (including skylights) and acoustic improvements. The project also renovated the Kishalay building (1825 SE Clinton) into a net-zero and net-positive energy building.

Continued Improvements

We changed the layout and made many important and exciting upgrades including: seismic upgrades, renewable energy production, high energy efficiency design, indoor air quality upgrades, and water conservation (low-flow fixtures, rain gardens). The renovation project used natural, non-toxic (Red-List free) and recyclable materials and sustainably-harvested wood (FSC certified).

With the help of a Portland General Electric Renewable Development Fund grant and community fundraising campaign, we were able to install a 45 kWh solar array on the roof of the Kishalay building.

In 2020 New Day School became the first net-zero preschool in Oregon.

Conservation in Action

Monitoring our energy use and production in real time.

We engage with the data from our energy monitoring system through several platforms which are used in many ways including: energy education, promoting energy saving behavior and for enhancing the building’s performance.

Renewable Energy Curriculum

A new preschool-appropriate curriculum with Clean Energy: Bright Futures

In 2019, New Day School was awarded funds from Portland General Electric Renewable Development Fund to create a preschool focused Renewable Energy Curriculum in partnership with Clean Energy: Bright Futures program. This originally designed curriculum is planned to be launched in Fall 2021.

Everyday Sustainability

Daily practices to embody our values.

Simple Living is not just a value we observe in our monthly ethical value curriculum, it is a way of being to remember: we can reduce what we need, we take only what is needed, and we leave or give back the rest.

Just some of the practices we undertake at New Day School to conserve and limit our use of resources:

Rain gardens | Organic fruit, vegetable and flower garden | Passive house structures | Composting | Worm bins | Reuse of materials | Upcycled play structures | Vegan diet
